4 Elements to Build the Ultimate Home Media Room

November 16, 2022

Effective Home Media Rooms Should Be Inviting, Versatile, and a Whole Lot of Fun!

How do most of us like to spend our time at home?

Watching football with friends, relaxing at home on a rainy weekend, and having family movie nights may be very different experiences, but they often happen in the same place. Your media room.

At One Source, we design and install state-of-the-art home media rooms in Washington, DC that adapt to any occasion through smart products and automation systems.

From the perfect TV screen and motorized shades to the placement of speakers and light features, we know the right brands and installation will make a difference.

Here is a brief overview of the equipment you need to make your new media room the most inviting and versatile place at home.

A Space Where Video Reigns Supreme

Rightfully so, the TV or projector screen takes center stage in most media rooms. However, the right video solution for your space depends on several  factors.

If there is not enough wall space for an 85” TV, a motorized projector screen with the same dimensions and a ceiling-mounted 8K projector could work.

Using a projector has additional advantages. Hide the screen when not in use, or adjust a projection’s dimensions and resolution based on how many people are watching and where they are sitting.

The screen type and dimensions also determine the minimum seating distance. Whether it is a comfortable sofa or plush reclinable seats, sitting too far or too close hinders the viewing experience.

Immerse Yourself in Surround Sound

Video may reign supreme, but there is nothing quite as immersive as a surround sound system. Are you watching Monday night football? You will feel as if you’re in the stadium. Is it horror movie night? Don’t jump out of your seat when you hear the alien breathing behind you!

Depending on the design and dimensions of your media room, you may opt for hidden in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, floor and wall-mounted loudspeakers, or a combination of both.

Where you position the speakers, subwoofer, AV receivers, media servers, and amplifiers will also matter to your experience of sound.

Compared to home theaters, soundproofing a media room may not be possible given its location and function at home. However, installing acoustic panels and digital sound correction equipment is an option that greatly improves sound quality.

Smart Lights & Shades to Top It Off

Smart lights should be the cherry on top of your new media room and respond to how the space is used similarly to AV systems.

Lutron, one of our brand partners, offers light fixtures, motorized shades, and lighting control tools to set the mood for any event in your media room.

Is it too bright outside? Roll the shades down at the press of a button. Are you having a romantic movie night? Set the lights down low and play some Barry White! In the meantime, contact us about making your media room the ultimate entertainment hub at home, no matter the occasion!
